    Look at the three pictures

Nikon NEF, Fuji RAF and Canon CR2

This is a nightmare -- I have neve been able to fix this--

Why doesnt RAF files show up with a little iconphoto as Nikons NEF files and Canon CR2 does??

It was like that back in 2013 when I sold my Canon gear, got a Fuji X-e1.
And this lack of RAF preview was one of the causes I sold my x-e1 some months later,
bought a nikon d750, and hurrrah windows raw preview again just as Canon!

In fact, on of the very few PC mysteries still unsolved since I started with IBM PC baack in the 1990ies :)

Probably because you have not updated the codec. Is your computer software up to date? What operating system are you running?

    Downloading now....

My win 10 installation is updated regularly and should be "the latest"

    But --
I know for sure this codec is the issue, and one can ask, why do Microsoft only supports big ones like Nikon and Canon
-- the Pana and fuji and more is not part of regular installation, you need to buy addons :-(

having said that, MS10 is very thin, what should we done without Bitdefender, the superb Acronis backup for our photos,
and IObit uninstaller, just to mention some must haves :)

They don't, I'd suggest you're seeing those thumbnails because you've either installed an older codec pack, or software from Nikon and Canon that are enabling the jpg previews to be shown for those raw files. A new Win 10 install probably wouldn't show the Nikon or Canon previews either.

Yepp. That cornerstone problem fixed!! Thank you!!
(what those xmp files are, I have no idea, just to delete, I guess its something Lightroom creates?)

The .xmp files are the so-called "sidecar" files which contain any/all edit information when you do anything with the RAW file in Lightroom. Bear in mind that you can't ever edit a RAW file (as such). That even extends to something like converting the image to black and white and/or severely cropping it. The RAW file remains in full colour and full resolution whatever you do. So any edits are stored in the .xmp as a way of instructing Lightroom how to display the image. If you delete the .xmp then all of your editing will instantly disappear. I guess that could be a good thing? As long as it was deliberate and what you wanted. :)

This is what I see in my Win7 machine:

    upload_2018-8-10_10-34-46.png

Do *not* delete your .xmp files. They contain all of the edits you have done in LightRoom.
There is a setting within LR itself where you can select whether or not to write to xmp files.

    Hi,
with windows systems, I have worst problems, when I open a folder with a lot of fuji raw's the computer just freeze and I need to kill explorer.
I bought a software, really cheap but it works fine for me:

I can use it on Windows and OSX.
    Hope this helps.

Just a point on the xmp sidecar files - they aren't really needed unless you want to make the LightRoom metadata visible outside of the LR environment.

All of the information about your edits is stored in the catalog - and that's what LR uses.

You probably have the catalog metadata settings to "automatically write settings to XMP".

    AND the big one:
I have subscribed for many years to the ADOBE:

    Photography plan (20GB)
Make amazing photos from anywhere, and truly transform them with Photoshop CC (starter storage included).
    US$120/ annual prepaid

As an old an retired mounatineer ;-)

I think its time to get something cheaper...

As I use Lightroom ONLY for sorting my photos, then I export them unchanged
Then I open my RAW files in Photoshop, and fixes them for my website.

I reckon I use approx 5% of LR abilities and about 7% of PHs

I never ever sync any files to clouds, phones or Ipads :)

A codec seems a simple thing to write and disseminate. My question is why doesn't Fuji (and the other non CaNikon) brands simply keep an codec on their website for free download?

I could be wrong - and have no way to test it - but I think they do.

I believe it comes with one of their free software packages - but now I have them all installed I'm not sure which.

The FastPictureViewer Codec Pack isn't installed on my computer but I get the RAF icons displayed.

Yes, it's probably the free Fujifilm 'Finepix Viewer' but this does not recognise my Nikon NEF images. Instead, I use the Freeware of FastStone Image Viewer, Please login or register to view links
which recognises many more graphic formats, but doesn't save to NEF, and then convert the Nikon NEFs to Tiffs if I want to seriously pp them with other non-Nikon software. FastStone is very useful for quick resizing and it also has some good pp actions which the purists would probably lift their noses at, but they are perfect for quick web use.

I also checked the Microsoft Community site...

...check the last page of 'Replies', currently #14, which confirms MS continues to be unhelpful with Win10

So...why did canon raw icons show up on my brand new computer, as I havent touched a canon since I owned canon d30 back in 2007?

Well now it does, along with my nice backup the raw files from Lumix LX-100 and of course d750 and xt2

Have worked with these files for several hrs, something very nice and helpfull happened,

    PS
I pay a annual fee of 120 usd for lightroom and photoshop. Should I renew as usual on sept 1 or should I look into something else.....

Being cheap I wait for the occasional Amazon UK deal to renew Lightroom and Photoshop which at least saves about 30% of the annual cost.

As charlie3 says you can do quite a lot with FastStone, and I use it a lot (although, frustratingly it doesn't recognize compressed RAF files).
